Accentuate the faint vein

March 2007

In a casual conversation with Couple “Douglas”, we were invited by our friend, acclaimed British artist Douglas White, to collaborate in his first solo installation exhibition, titled LILITH, with a lighting proposal to uplift his astonlishing sculptural works showen at the Paradise Row.

Minding his works which predominantly created with found and discarded materials, and often produces strange and compelling sculptural works that sidestep the distinction between figuration and abstration, the lighting we propose for this installation is more about providing a subtle dimension that merely reveal the very undefine quality of the work rather than overstating the sculptural existence.

The Story of Owl (2007) comprises of  freestanding, framed pane of glass bearing the faint, greasy imprint of an owl with wings outstretched, left by the unfortunate creature when it flew, full pelt, into a patio door belonging to an elderly couple in Leicestershire. Alerted to the existence of the imprint by a photograph in a newspaper, Douglas tracked the couple down andsecured the patio door, which is reframed and delicately accentuated in the darkened gallery space, by a moon-white LED with lenses carefully positioned to reveal a mystical presence and an ghostly silhouette hovering in the dark.

Other works, such as Series of Moons, skilfully created by circles of wax presented in a variety of cabinets, draws and stands, are the result of more direct sculptural interventions and frame-lit by LED discretly concealed within the stands.
