To commemorate the Art Council’s 60th anniversary, Liz Davis was commissioned by the General Public Agency to produce 1000 knitted travel card covers for an Arts Council project. These are being given out to the public across England early 2007.
“In the Europe of the 21st century, a world of sleek functionality and silver gadgets, hand-made objects are becoming a rarity. These knitted wallets, each one a little different, turn mass-production on its head and subvert the concept of the mass-produced goods. Each item reflects something of the individuality of the handful of women who created them. So it is that a simple everyday item is transformed with a dash of absurdity and colour and a pair of knitting needles.” – by Arts Council’s website.
Liz Davis is an artist whose work includes paintings, sound recordings, film and knitting. Davis’ label – Buffy – covers the more commercial end of her artistic practice such as scarves, quilts as garments, balaclavas, wraps, shawls, and now travel wallets, all knitted from wool sourced from a former Chanel supplier in France.
In small and limited quantity, Liz Davis will produce the knitted wallets to commission. For Enquiry, Commission and Sale, please contact: info@exhibit-goldenlane.com
