20. Samantha Mark: Beautiful Old People are Works of Art

New Exhibition to occupy the EXHIBIT gallery space is the work of young fashion designer, Samantha Mark.

Samantha wanted to create a space which allowed her to showcase some of her most recent designs, within a fresh, innovative and eye-catching installation. In addition, Samantha created a variety of stylish bags for men and women in both small and larger sizes, which can be bought at the gallery or ordered on request for bespoke material.

All this may seem quite conventional, however this young British designer has in fact created an entire collection from red, white and blue ‘grass-mat cloth’. Whereas we would usually expect to see this material in the form of heavy-duty shopping or laundry bags, or used as industrial canvas, Samantha instead produced an array of beautifully-crafted handbags and dresses.

The exhibition is predominantly about blending the old with the new, as Samantha says,
“I wanted to create a collection that showed the pride I have in my tradition and culture. These garments and accessories reflect several generations merged into one held together through heritage and culture.”

By taking an archaic material we would hardly even notice, and creating from it new and visually stunning fashion garments, Samantha Mark’s exhibition breathes new life into this dated fabric.

Samantha also wanted the gallery display to have an ‘eclectic’ feel, since much of her collection was inspired by her grandparents’ home and their distinctive furnishings. And so began the search for antique, golden picture frames and mannequins with which to build our installation. The process was fascinating to watch; Samantha remarkably created three stunning garments from a material so awkward you can just about fold it in half! The third and main dress consists of an unfolding trail, running directly off from the original roll of white and blue material that trail the origin of its inspiration.

Samantha’s work is on display here at the gallery until beginning of October, so come in and see for yourself. However the chances are that you will probably be leaving with one of her fantastic bags or little clutches
